DIRECTIONS:
In the passage that follows, certain words and phrases are bolded and numbered. And you will find alternatives for the bolded part. In most cases, you are to choose the one that best expresses the idea, makes the statement appropriate for standard written English, or is worded most consistently with the style and tone of the passage as a whole. If you think the original version is best, choose “NO CHANGE.” You will also find questions about a section of the passage, or about the passage as a whole. These questions do not refer to an bolded portion of the passage, but rather are identified by a number or numbers in a box.

PASSAGE Preserving Eatonville

Part 1

The small town of Eatonville, Florida—(1) the United States’ first incorporated African American township, had just celebrated its centennial in 1987 when unsettling news arrived. The county planned to turn Eatonville’s main thoroughfare, a two-lane street (2) into a major highway. Citizens were concerned that the small-town feel of their historic community would be lost. They rallied to form a preservation association, whose initial efforts centered on launching a festival celebrating the town’s most famous resident—author and folklorist Zora Neale Hurston.(3)
Raised at the turn of the century in the culturally affirming environment of Eatonville, Hurston was uniquely positioned to grow up watching black citizens empowered to make unprecedented social and civil progress.
Around her she saw people of color leading the local government [4], directing school curricula, and running businesses. This upbringing helped shape Hurston into an outspoken literary figure, arguably the most influential female voice of the Harlem Renaissance in the 1930s. (5)

Part 2

Eatonville residents hoped (6) showcasing the town’s rich cultural heritage would convince county officials regarding it’s (7) historic significance. Thus (8), the Zora Neale Hurston Festival of the Arts and Humanities were established (9). It focused on not only the author and her works as well as (10) her fierce commitment to amplifying black voices through art. The (11) inaugural festival, which featured such renowned speakers as novelist Alice Walker and while attracting (12) thousands of attendees, was a resounding success.
The county was effectively swayed; the highway plan was scrapped. Since then, the festival has continued to evolve, increasing in complexity and popularity each year. With events taking place in various locations throughout the area during the weeklong festival (13), organizers present an array of exhibitions, performances, and workshops each January (14). And, thanks in by and large (15) to Hurston’s legacy, Eatonville residents enjoy their victory in the form of a preserved two-lane road.
